How to painlessly replace your old Windows 7 laptop now that Microsoft is killing Win 7 support

Microsoft’s support for Windows 7 is officially over, so if you’re still running a PC on it, you’re doing it at your own risk. You can upgrade to Windows 10 and, if you’re currently running a licensed and activated copy of Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 Home or Pro, here’s how to do it for free.  But, in my own experience making the switch from Windows 7 to Windows 10, my laptop’s performance became frustratingly slow. It was a low-end laptop to begin with and, although it met Win 10′s system requirements, it just wasn’t a great experience. I ended up turning that into a Chromebook for my kids and moving on to a laptop built for what Windows 10 offers.   The end of Windows 7 support is as good a time as any to make the jump to Microsoft’s current OS or consider a switch to Mac or Chrome, or even get a laptop with Linux preinstalled. But if you’re not sure where to start right now, here are five easy picks to help steer you on your search. You can also head straight to our list of best laptops and desktops; also, here are our best gaming laptops, 15-inch laptops, two-in-ones and Chromebooks, as well as the best choi...

By entering your email address you agree to our Terms of Use and Privacy Policy and consent to receive emails from Time Out about news, events, offers and partner promotions. Futuristic family the Jetsons might be jealous of the technology being employed inside Hayden Hall, Chicago’s newest food hall from DMK restaurant group (Ada St., Fish Bar, County BBQ). Guests who frequent the space, which is nestled inside the CNA Building at 333 S Wabash Ave in the Loop, will use the Grubhub app to monitor food-prep times and order eats from the hall’s 10 stalls. Place an order in advance for pick-up, opt for delivery or mull over the menus on your phone from the venue’s picturesque natural wine bar. Every kiosk provides a constantly updated wait time so that customers know exactly how long their meal will take to prepare. A digital leaderboard plastered near the entrance also displays these digits so that walk-in diners can easily assess their plan of attack. Though each kitchen is equipped with mounted iPads that allow guests to browse and purchase menu items without downloading the app, DMK co-owner David Morton says that he expects most people will take advantage of ...

On the same day, another residential house located in Indatwa Village of Rwezamenyo Sector in Nyarugenge District caught fire. In this incident, all the four children who were trapped inside the house were successfully rescued by the Rwanda National Police (RNP) Fire and Rescue Brigade (FRB) with the help from the residents. According to police statistics, between January and July this year 105 fire incidents were recorded across the country, an 11 per cent drop compared to the same period last year. The fires include those in houses – both residential and commercial – vehicles as well as wild fires, but the majority of the incidents are reported in residential facilities. “We have invested a lot in preventive measures, including awareness and educating different groups of people on how to avert fires as well as acquiring hi-tech firefighting equipment. This has massively paid off,” said Assistant Commissioner of Police Jean Bosco Seminega, the Commanding Officer of the Fire and Rescue Brigade. He said that the majority of the fire incidents stem from human errors or behaviours and poor electric installations. “Domestic appliances such as heaters, iron, fridge, washing machines...

Rapid prototyping, 3D printing, and CNC machining are leading digital manufacturing

In the last decades, the manufacturing sector has been facing a significant transformation. New production methods such as rapid prototyping, 3D printing, CNC machining entered the market and paved a new era for improved manufacturing.  Companies are continually looking for ways to make manufacturing processes more efficient, sustainable, and digitized. Therefore, the sector is implementing more enhanced machines and production techniques. For instance, 3D printing alone is predicted to reach 26.7 billion USD by the end of 2019. Advanced manufacturing technologies are thriving and changing the industry for the best. If you’re an owner of automotive, automation, robotics, equipment, aerospace, or similar business, you should recognize the potential of digitized manufacturing for your product design and thereby the company. Prototyping and modeling are essential elements of exquisite product design. However, many years, manufacturing companies have been reducing prototyping due to expensive materials and lengthy processes. Now, with fast modeling, every production business can afford to refine designs and bring manufacturing to the next level of excellence. The good news is you do...

Trying to summarize a decade’s worth of music is complicated. To do so is to set

Trying to summarize a decade’s worth of music is complicated. To do so is to set an arbitrary limit somewhere—we stopped at 150 albums, but it could have been more. We didn’t exclusively include American or English albums, but they do comprise a significant majority. We tried to encompass as many genres as possible, but we won’t even begin to describe our efforts as exhaustive. And while we tried to divide up the albums evenly between years, there’s no doubt that some are represented better than others (2019 has the smallest presence—it’s always hard to evaluate a year in context when it just ended a few days ago). Maybe it’s a futile effort to try to summarize something that’s too broad and abstract to fit into one cohesive list. But we did it anyway. First, here’s the why: Much like we do at the end of every year, we took a moment to take stock of where we are now, at the end of the decade rather than while we’re experiencing it. It’s an opportunity to see if our tastes have changed, to see what music ended up having the most significant influence both on us and on other music, and to take a look at what made the most ripples, and did so in a way that kept our attention. This ...

MGM reportedly ‘in acquisition talks’ with Netflix and Apple

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, the studio which co-owns the Bond movies, has reportedly been courting Netflix and Apple over a potential acquisition deal. The streaming studio and the tech giant, which has now moved full steam into original content broadcast and production, are said to be among those in ‘preliminary talks’ to buy MGM, one of Hollywood’s oldest studios. MGM was brought out of near bankruptcy in 2010 by a consortium of investors, and according to CNBC, which first reported the talks, it has vast content library worth around $10 billion, made up of the Bond movie catalogue as well as everything from the Rocky films to Mad Max. As well as the MGM catalogue, it also owns the catalogues of studios like United Artists and Orion Pictures, while in recent years, it signed deal with Annapurna Pictures and George Clooney’s Smokehouse Pictures. MGM also brought the critically acclaimed The Handmaid’s Tale to screens via its TV arm and the streaming platform Hulu in the US. But it follows recent remarks from Barbara Broccoli, the co-owner of Eon Productions, the studio which makes the Bond movies, that it could potentially move into the streaming sphere. She t...

36 Amazing Things Under $20 On Amazon That Keep Selling Out

You know that feeling when you come across an amazing new shopping find — and your heart starts to beat a little faster with the realization that this is exactly what you’ve been looking for? Imagine now, that when you move quickly to add that puppy to your cart, you’re met with those dreaded words that completely harsh your shopping vibe: sold out. Amazon products selling out are always frustrating — because being unable to keep them in stock only proves the absolute greatness of the product. Since the only sensible way to address this matter of supply and demand is to strategize, I’m presenting a round-up chock-full of the many Amazon products selling out — along with some unsolicited advice on the matter. Let’s face it, instant gratification makes this Prime shipping world we live in go ‘round, so having to wait for a restock is a big letdown. How best to avoid this online shopping catastrophe is something I’ve been considering deeply, and here’s what I’ve come up with: In soccer, they have a saying, “be first to the ball,” because that’s how you ultimately score. Clearly, the same applies to online shopping, which is why my advice is not to dilly-dally, but rather take in th...

[Mastro Gippo] recently purchased a wall mounted charger for his electric car that looked great and

[Mastro Gippo] recently purchased a wall mounted charger for his electric car that looked great and had all the bells and whistles he wanted. There was only one problem: the thing burned up on him. Looking to find out how this seemingly high-end piece of hardware gave up the ghost so easily, he took it apart and tried to figure out where things went wrong. While he’s not looking to sling any mud and actually name the company who produced the charger, he certainly has some choice words for whoever green-lit this particular design. With the charger open, there’s little doubt that something became very toasty inside. A large swath of the PCB has a black char mark on it, and in some places it looks like the board burned right through. After a close examination, [Mastro] is of the opinion that the board heated up to the point that the solder actually liquified on some connections. This conductive flow then shorted out components below it, and things went from bad to worse. But where did all the heat come from? [Mastro] was stunned to see that a number of the components inside the charger were only rated for 30 amps, despite the label for the product clearly stating it’s good for up t...

Are Growing Pains Afflicting Your Business? How To Successfully Scale Your Company.

Ambitious entrepreneurs often are determined to grow their businesses by expanding into new areas, adding new products, and increasing the size of their workforce. But growth comes with potential hazards, which is why one of the leading causes of business failure is overexpansion – growing too much too fast. “There are so many complexities involved with growing a company” says Shawn Burcham (www.shawnburcham.com), author of Keeping Score with GRITT: Straight Talk Strategies for Success, and founder and CEO of PFSbrands, the parent company of Champs Chicken, Cooper’s Express and BluTaco. “If you’ve been a parent and raised kids, you can relate it to the various ages of kids. Much like your kids need different things at different ages, your business has different needs at different stages of growth.” Constantly evaluate employees. When a company is growing and improving, employees need to do the same, Burcham says. He’s an advocate of lifelong learning and expects employees to commit to continual personal improvement through reading, seminars or other educational efforts. In addition, while Burcham likes to promote from within, he will look elsewhere when necessary. “Scaling requi...

Introducing: The Stan Smith Signature Watch From Maurice de Mauriac

Some people think Stan Smith is a shoe. They’re not totally wrong, but he’s more than just an iconic piece of Adidas footwear. He’s now a watch, too.  Maurice de Mauriac has recently paired up with tennis legend Stan Smith to produce a watch that honors Smith’s 100 victories on the tennis court. Daniel Dreifuss is the man behind Maurice de Mauriac, a small Swiss watchmaker out of Zurich. He approached Smith with an idea: Make a mechanical watch designed to stand up to use on the court, but that also plays off Smith’s legendary status as a style icon, with nods to the effortlessly cool style of 1970s athletic wear. Dreifuss credits The Royal Tenenbaums as part of the impetus for the creation of this watch. The watch will be made in green, red, and blue, in a quantity of 100 examples each. The quantity isn’t entirely arbitrary: it’s a nod to Smith’s 39 victories in singles and 61 victories in doubles, totaling 100 wins. Stan is a champ, after all.   The watch is loosely based on Maurice de Mauriac’s Deepsky range, with hash marks on the inner track of the dial and indices on the outside. The Stan Smith watch leans into the tennis aesthetic with green-grass accents and a NATO that ...
